Tin glazed earthenware (majolica)
Fontana workshop.
These flat-sided flasks, recalling similiar ones usd by pilgrims, were popular in the 16th century. Used for decanting or display, they were highly ornate. The classically inspired motifs and white background on this one are characteristic of the Fontana workshop in Urbino. The medallion in the centre imitates a Roman cameo.
