Gregarious-scattered in pine woods emerging from beneath dense leafy debris. Cylindrical-convex (occasionally conical when small or umbonate in large mature individuals) cap is white with light brown scales that darken with age. White stem initially stains reddish following a couple seconds (after handling) then fades to brownish-red after about an hour.
