Dr Yaw Perbi (born March 16, 1978) is a trained Ghanaian medical doctor, author, publisher, sought-after preacher and inspirational teacher and life coach.. [1] He is the founder and Global CEO of The HuD Group [2] and the Principal at Perbi Executive Leadership Education, an executive coaching, leadership development, management training and consulting firm.
Yaw Perbi was born on 16th March 1978 in Ghana to Akosua Adoma Perbi (née Nketia, daughter of J. H. Kwabena Nketia [3]), a Ghanaian author and history professor, and Reindorf Baah Perbi, a Chartered Accountant [4]. Yaw had his primary education at Ridge Church School in Accra and like his mother attended Achimota School, also in Accra, for his secondary education. He trained as a medical doctor at the University of Ghana Medical School from 1997 to 2005 [5].
Medical practice
After medical school, Yaw Perbi practised medicine at the 37 Military Hospital from 2005 to 2009 [6], serving from house officer to medical officer and spent the last year as a captain with the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI), part of the Ghanaian military’s medical corps there. On July 21 2008, while travelling to Abidjan with two of his UNOCI colleagues, their car was involved in an accident. Only Yaw escaped death. One of the colleagues, Major Archer, died on the spot while the other colleague died later from the injuries he sustained. [7] After this accident, Yaw decided to quit medicine to focus on ministry/missionary work and developing leaders [8]. He completed a Master of Arts degree in Global Leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary in 2020 [9] and is a PhD candidate at the same institution.
Leadership Development and Ministry/Missionary Work
While a student at the University of Ghana Medical School, Yaw Perbi and eight of his friends founded The HuD Group in 2003 [10]. The Group is focused on the development of holistic emerging and established leaders. The Group has since grown to have a presence in 25 countries [11]. Yaw Perbi served as the president of the International Student Ministry Canada (ISMC) from 2013 to 2021 [12]. He was also pastor of the Montreal Chinese Alliance Grace Church in Montréal, Canada from 2012 to 2016 [13]. As an international speaker and preacher, Yaw Perbi has spoken to audiences in over fifty countries and has made appearances on international media platforms such as the BBC, CNN, VOA and CBC [14]. He has been vocal on many national issues in Ghana including economic affairs [15] [16], and especially on leadership issues, as he sees everything as rising and falling on leadership [17]. He is a fellow of both the African Leadership Initiative and Aspen Institute’s Global Leadership Network [18] and is also the Lausanne Movement Catalyst for International Student Ministries [19].
Yaw is the founding International Director of Kwiverr, a consortium of several mission agencies [20]. He is a John C. Maxwell certified coach with expertise in Life Coaching [21]. He is on the International Leadership Team of the Send Africa Network and co-founder of its flagship African Centre for Mission Mobilization and Research, a collaboration with the Akrofi-Christaller Institute.
Yaw Perbi is married to Anyele Perbi with whom he has seven children [22]. Anyele is the CEO of Perbi Cubs Library Services, a literacy-promoting endeavour she co-founded with her husband, Yaw [23]. Perbi Cubs provides users a combination of in-school programmes and a digital platform to grant children access to thousands of books. Yaw Perbi was honoured with the Newmont Ghana Highest Award for Excellence in 2006 when he was only 28 [24]. In February 2023, considering how much of his life he had poured into championing financial literacy and pioneering investment clubs across Ghana, he broke into tears on a Ghanaian radio morning show while expressing his disappointment about the Government of Ghana’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) [25]
Yaw Perbi has authored numerous articles, book chapters, manuals and books [26] [27]. His published books include:
