Early Life and Education: Mr. Udupachar Sangam was born on June 10, 1923, in a small village in Sangam, Bijapur district, Karnataka. He hailed from a Kannada-speaking Madhwa Brahmin family. He completed his early education in Raichur, matriculated in 1941, and pursued intermediate studies in Gulbarga (Kalburagi).
Career Beginnings: On September 14, 1944, Mr. Sangam joined the teaching staff of Nrupatunga High School on a modest salary of Rs. 25 per month. His dedication to teaching and his students quickly became evident.
Involvement in the Freedom Movement: During the late 1940s, as Hyderabad State was on the brink of a significant political struggle, Mr. Sangam became actively involved in the Hyderabad State Congress movement led by Swami Ramanand Tirtha. He left his teaching job to work underground for the cause, demonstrating his commitment to India’s independence.
Return to Teaching: After Hyderabad’s accession to India in 1948, Mr. Sangam returned to Nrupatunga High School. His innovative teaching methods and rapport with students made him a beloved figure. He was appointed acting Headmaster on July 1, 1955, following the departure of Mr. D. G. Mahagaonkar.
Leadership and Achievements: Under Mr. Sangam’s leadership, Nrupatunga High School flourished, becoming one of the premier educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh. The school consistently achieved near 100% pass rates, and many distinguished students emerged from its ranks. His efforts were recognized with the President’s National Award in 1969.
Expansion and Legacy: Mr. Sangam’s vision extended beyond the high school. He played a pivotal role in upgrading Nrupatunga High School to a Junior College in 1969-70, thanks to significant grants from the Andhra Pradesh and Mysore governments. He became the Principal of the Junior College, overseeing its development into a leading institution.
Recognition and Impact: In recognition of his contributions, Mr. Sangam was nominated to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) by the Andhra Pradesh government in 1969. His dedication to education and his students left an indelible mark on Nrupatunga College, which stands as a testament to his life’s work.
Passing: Mr. Udupachar Sangam passed away on the night of September 7, 1976, leaving behind a legacy of educational excellence and commitment to social causes. His colleagues and friends, who had worked closely with him for decades, deeply mourned his loss.
Mr. Sangam’s life and work continue to inspire generations, and Nrupatunga College remains a monument to his enduring legacy.
