Sammi Cannold [1] is an American Broadway and film director. [2] She is a member of the Forbes' 30 Under 30 in Hollywood and Entertainment list [3], one of Variety's 10 Broadway Stars to Watch [4], and one of Town and Country's Creative Aristocracy [5]. She is the recipient of a 2024 Drama Desk Award. [6]
Career
Cannold has a bachelor's degree from Stanford University and a Master's degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. [7] [8] Cannold made her broadway debut on 10 December 2023 at the Belasco Theater with the original show How to Dance in Ohio [9] [10], for which she won a Drama Desk Award. Cannold was trained under Diane Paulus, and Rachel Chavkin, serving as the associate director on the Broadway production of Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 and was working at the American Repertory Theater during this time. [11] In 2019, Cannold directed the world premier of Celine Song's Endlings, making her the youngest female director in the American Repertory Theater's history, prior to directing its off-Broadway premier at New York Theater Workshop in 2020. [12] Sammi Cannold also directed the site-specific Ragtime on Ellis Island [13], Violet on a moving bus [14], Evita at New York City Center. [15] [16] [17], and Carmen at Rose Hall, Lincoln Center. Cannold's Evita at the American Repertory Theater and Shakespeare Theater Company was a critical success. [19] [20] [21]
In 2019, she was named a member of Forbes Magazine's 30 Under 30 in Hollywood and Entertainment list. [22]
In 2022, Sammi Cannold and Dori Berinstein announced The Show Must Go On, a documentary covering theater production during the Covid Pandemic. The documentary premiered at Broadway's Majestic Theatre on August 9th, 2021 and was released on Apple TV. [23]
