Peter Coyl is an American librarian. He served as President of the Freedom to Read Foundation from 2022-23 [1]and is currently the Library Director & CEO of the Sacramento Public Library. [2]
Coyl earned a Masters in Library and Information Science from Drexel University and a Bachelors in Public Administration and Public Policy from Oakland University. [3]
Coyl grew up in the Arden-Arcade area of Sacramento and received his first library card from the Arcade Library. [4]
Coyl began his library career in high school at the Rochester Hills Public Library shelving children's books and later driving their Bookmobile. He was a Librarian at an International School in Taiwan [4] and later worked at the Dallas Public Library before becoming Director of the Montclair Public Library. [5]
Coyl served on the Stonewall Book Award Committee in 2013 [6] and was its Chair in 2014. [7]
Coyl served as Director of the Montclair Public library from 2017 to 2021 [8]. Coyl was hailed as a "visionary leader...with managerial savvy and keen familiarity with the state of the art" by a former member of the Board of Trustees. [9]. He was announced as the next Director of the Sacramento Public Library on December 10, 2021. [10].
As President of the Freedom to Read Foundation, Coyl accepted the Innovator Award on behalf of the Foundation at the LA Times Festival of Books [11] and appeared on a panel with authors Angie Thomas and George Johnson. [12]
