Mohammed Korayem (Arabic: السيد محمد كُرَيم, romanized: El-Sayed Mohammed Kurayyim) more commonly known in the western world as Koraim Pasha, was an Egyptian nationalist, politician, military commander, and governor of Alexandria. Korayem is known for being the Governor of Alexandria, and the leader of the Alexandrian popular resistance against the French Invasion during the French Campaign in Egypt. [1] [2].
Korayem led a force of around 500 men who resisted the French invasion of Alexandria in July 1798. [3]. This resistance was overpowered by the French, led by Napoleon Bonaparte who went on to capture much of the Egyptian north coast, extending to the Levant [4]
Korayem is well remembered in Egypt, with many public facilities, roads, schools and public spaces named after him in Alexandria. He is widely celebrated due to being the first commander who stood against Napoleon in the long campaign in Egypt [5] [6] [7]
