Dr Manvinder Rattan FRSM (born 16 July 1966) is an English choral conductor and conducting tutor.
Born in Nairobi, Kenya on 16 July 1966, Rattan moved to England at the age of two. He was educated at Churchfields Junior School and Ilford County High School for Boys, [1] [2] where teachers encouraged him to pursue music. [3]
Rattan was musical director at the John Lewis Partnership for 25 years, finishing in 2021. A unique role in the retail industry, Rattan was responsible for the partnership's 15 choirs, 1 orchestra and in-house tuition service. [4] [2]
As a conducting tutor, Rattan was trained by Sing for Pleasure and became the Head of Conductor Training until 2024. [5]
Rattan was a judge on the BBC2 series The Choir: Sing While You Work and BBC Choir of the Year. [6] In 2016, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from York St John University for his work in the field of music and conducting. [4]
He was appointed CEO of Voices Foundation in 2021 [7] [8] where he was tasked to implement a new three-year strategy focussing on pupils from disadvantaged areas. [9] He is also the conductor of Hertford Choral Society [10] and professional ensembles Serafine Chamber Choir and Serafine Sinfonia. [11]
