Leonard Mountain is named for Leonard M. Hess, the son of pioneer Big Bend rancher Louis L. Hess. (1) It is located on the Hess Ranch eight miles north of Marathon in northern Brewster County (at 30°20' N, 103°14' W). The peak is at an elevation of 5,868 feet above sea level and it rises 1,190 feet above the surrounding plains. Shallow, stony soils of the area support such native flora as live oak, piñon pine, juniper, a variety of cacti and native grasses. (2)
