Kevin Gnapoor is the rapping mathlete in the 2004 film Mean Girls and its musical counterpart. He is portrayed by Rajiv Surendra in the original 2004 film, Cheech Manohar in its Broadway musical version and will be portrayed by Mahi Alam in the upcoming film adaptation of the musical.
Kevin G is the son of Indian parents who moved to the US before he was born. He is a Math Enthusiast and Bad-ass MC Kevin Gnapoor, or Kevin G, as he’s more commonly called. Kevin is influenced by hip-hop and rap culture around him and aims to be a rapper along with his being the Captain of the North Shore Mathletes team, and raps with his group K.G and The Power of Three.: [1]
Kevin G is sure about what he wants and doesn't care about what the plastics or the other kids at school think about him. He is confident about himself and is not shy to go after what he wants whether it is rapping, MC ing, DJ ing or winning the Mathletes competition. He does not let his ethnicity or appearance hold him back and aims to show the world that you can be South Asian AND cool [2]. Multi-talented and a go-getter, KG has his goals clearly defined.
Kevin G has a minor role in Mean Girls as the Captain of the North Shore High Mathletes team who has a crush on Janis Ian. Cady played by Lindsay Lohan initially turns him down as the other kids in the school advise her against being a Mathletes as they are considered nerdy but when she realizes how superficial The Plastics were, she comes back to join them and goes on to help them win the competition.
The character was revived for the broadway counterpart of the film, but with a trimmed down role for the musical.
Kevin G is featured in two songs, "Whose House Is This?" and "Do This Thing". [3]
Kevin G is the comic relief in Mean Girls who is different from the others as he does not give into social pressures like the protagonist Cady Heron and instead inspires her to join the Mathletes as she loves Math and go after the things she cared about instead of trying to fit in and be one of the popular kids at school. His character was also thought to be ahead of his times [4].Some of Mean Girls' iconic lines are delivered by Kevin G and are a very integral part of Mean Girls. These include:
