Dr John K. Healy was a pioneer in renal research in Australia. He was the first Lion's Research Fellow at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. He started the LIONS Renal Research Laboratory in Brisbane in 1966, with additional funding from the National Heart Foundation and the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia. During his tenure at the Lion’s Renal Research Laboratory, he published internationally recognised articles on renal research [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] and developed a widely accepted kidney function test. [11]
In 1979, at the Wesley Hospital, Dr. Healy performed peritoneal dialysis on several patients with acute renal failure and the first hemodialysis at the Wesley. This experience contributed to the initiation in 1989 of the first private dialysis unit in Brisbane, in conjunction with Dr. Philip Boyle. The Dialysis Unit has expanded over the years to become a very large private chronic Dialysis Unit in Queensland.
Dr. Healy served for some years on the Ethics Committee of the Wesley Hospital. He became Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Wesley Hospital in 1992-3, as he was an ex-officio Member of the Wesley Hospital Board. He was made an Emeritus Fellow of that Hospital in 2003 [12].
