Dave Cormier is a systems change leader and open educator [1] based in Canada, and employed as a learning specialist in the Office of Open Learning at the University of Windsor since January 2020. [2]. As a researcher, educator, and education blogger with over 25 years of international experience in education, he is also the author of Learning in a Time of Abundance.
Cormier earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Dalhousie University in 1997, and a Masters of Education in Literacies Education from Mount Saint Vincent University in 2004. He is currently completing his PhD through the Joint PhD in Educational Studies offered in partnership between the University of Windsor, Lakehead University, and Brock University. [3] His research focuses on pedagogies of abundance and learner engagement. [4] [5]
Cormier has contributed to rhizomatic learning, [6] [7] [8] [9] the development of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), [10] open education, [11] and the impact of the internet and digital tools in education (e.g., abundance, uncertainty, [12] and more recently, Artificial Intelligence [13] [14]).
As a learning specialist, Cormier has been involved in many OER projects including the multi-institutional Liberated Learners project, [15] [16] which won an Open Education Award for Excellence from OEGlobal in 2022. [17] He has also been featured as a keynote speaker at multiple conferences (e.g., [18] [19] [20] [21]).
As someone who had been involved with online learning for two decades, Cormier was also influential when the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a quick shift to online learning in early 2020, [22] developing resources, [23] creating a series of videos, [24] offering webinars, [25] and keynoting at relevant conferences. [26] His earlier work on rhizomatic learning also influenced other scholars and educators as the pandemic continued, its lasting impact on education was being made clear. [27]
