Coalition for the Homeless is a not-for-profit organization focused on homelessness in Houston, Texas and serves as the lead agency coordinating the community response to homelessness in the Houston/Harris County area.. [1] [2] [3] [4]. Established in 1982, the Coalition works to prevent and end homelessness by providing leadership, advocacy, and coordination of services among a network of local service providers, government agencies, and community stakeholders.
The Coalition's primary roles include conducting the annual homeless census in Houston, managing the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), administering funding for homeless services, and coordinating the local Continuum of Care (CoC) program [5]. The organization also facilitates collaboration among service providers, advocates for policies and funding to support homeless initiatives, and raises public awareness about homelessness issues in the Houston area [6]
Key initiatives led by the Coalition include The Way Home, a collaborative effort to end chronic and veteran homelessness in Houston which is made up of more than 100 partners, including homeless service agencies, local governments, public housing authorities, the local Veterans Affairs office, and other nonprofits and community stakeholders as well as the Coordinated Access system, which streamlines the process of connecting homeless individuals with appropriate housing and support services. The Coalition also publishes annual reports on homelessness in the Houston area and provides educational resources for the public and service providers.
