In Taiwan, a Buddhist nun by the name of Dharma Master Shih Cheng Yen first established the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation in 1966. It is a worldwide non-profit humanitarian organisation. Over 100 nations have benefited from its programmes involving its Four Missions (Charity, Medicine, Education, Humanistic Culture) and eight "Footprints" (the Four Missions and International Relief, Bone Marrow Donation, Community Volunteerism, and Environmental Protection) [1]
The Buddhist Tzu Chi Merit Organization (Singapore) Ltd. was founded in 2016 and engages in charitable and religious activities that serve society and uphold the spirit and core of Buddhism. It offers humanitarian relief to persons in need overseas, irrespective of their ethnicity or religion, as a registered non-profit organisation. Its relief operations are carried out in compliance with the law and regulations and are funded by locally-raised donations. The heart of Tzu Chi is ingrained in its name: in Chinese, "tzu"(慈) signifies compassion and "chi,"(济) relief. [2]
